Rapids Camp Sagana Rafting course has been proposed as the venue for the 2027 Africa Canoe Slalom Championship, following a bid by the Kenya Rowing and Canoe Federation (KRCF).
In its bid, the federation has formally requested the Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, to host the 2027 Africa Canoe Slalom Championship at the Rapids Camp Sagana course.
In a letter to the Ministry, KRCF Chairman Richard Olakhi said, “The proposed championship presents an opportunity for Kenya to host a major continental canoe event and strategically position Sagana as a regional hub for Canoe Slalom and whitewater sports in Africa”.
The bid is a positive step towards strengthening emerging sports in the country and it will also help synergize working relations among different watersport disciplines in the country, all to help grow and develop the disciplines
“The federation intends to pursue the hosting in collaboration with the Kenya Rafting Federation alongside the proposed African Rafting Championship, thereby creating a significant continental paddle sports event,” Olakhi added.
Rapids Camp Sagana is steadily emerging as a premier whitewater sports center in Africa, boasting world-class facilities and a 280–300-metre technical whitewater course on the Tana River. The course is increasingly gaining recognition and carving out a niche for itself in the international watersports sector.
Rapid’s camp Sagana has already hosted major international competitions, including the 2025 Africa Rafting Championships and the 2026 World Rafting Cup Series the first World Rafting Cup Series event to be held on the African continent.
The successful hosting of these events has further enhanced Rapids Camp Sagana’s profile as a premier whitewater destination and strengthened Kenya’s position as an emerging hub for paddle and watersports on the continent.
