Last year’s African Championship runners-up, South Sudan, are determined to go one step further after finishing second to Kenya at the 2025 African Championships held at Rapids Camp Sagana. The same venue is now hosting the 2026 Rafting World Cup Series.
“We are prepared for the competition, and we are going to make sure that at least we bring this to Africa and it must remain here in Africa. Even if we are not going to be number one, we will try to finish somewhere among the top three,” said South Sudan captain Gatluak Char Reath.
Reath noted that last year’s African Championship was South Sudan’s first international competition at Sagana and that the team gained valuable experience from the event.
“Last year’s African Championship was the first time we competed here, and we learned a lot from the experience. The currents on the Sagana River are a little stronger compared to the river back home. When the competition kicks off, we need all the fans to come and cheer us. We are not going to let them down. We will make sure we do something that will make them proud,” he added.
The South Sudan team is composed of 16 athletes—eight men and eight women—who will compete in all three disciplines: Sprint, RX, and Slalom. The team is eager to deliver a strong performance and make their country proud.
